Connect an external task source

Connect a project to an external task source so its issues can become context for agent work.

Before you start

Open the intended project and Tasks. You need authorized access to the external tracker and the credentials or environment-variable reference requested by its connection form. Do not paste a token into a task description or agent message.

The Jira connection form includes the source and assignee controls alongside its connection details. Other providers show their own required fields.

Step by step

1. Use the add-connection action beside the task sources. Choose Jira, Linear, ClickUp, or Asana.

2. Give the connection a recognizable name. Enter the provider-specific connection details. For Jira, the form includes the site URL, email, and API token.

3. Choose the relevant board or other source using the form’s source fields and loading controls. Confirm that it belongs to the project you intend to work on.

4. Set the assignee filter if you want a narrower view. For a provider that supports loading assignees, load the list before choosing a person.

5. Optionally choose the suggested status when a pull request is done. This is a suggestion shown in the shipping workflow; it does not automatically update the external issue.

6. Choose Save, select the new source in Tasks, and confirm that the expected issues appear. Open one issue and review its details before starting implementation.

What to expect

The external source becomes a project task view. Its issues provide context for agent work while retaining their identity in the original tracker.

Troubleshooting and useful details

If loading fails, inspect the actual connection error and check the site, credentials, source identifier, and account access. An empty list can also be caused by an assignee filter. Fields differ between providers; use the instructions in the selected provider’s form. The screenshot shows the Jira setup form with no new credentials entered.
