Change a design’s system and manage local overrides
Choose shared styles while preserving intentional differences in one design.
Last updated 23 September 2026
Open the Design system tab in a Studio design. The system selector controls the shared foundation; Local overrides contains values specific to this design.
Choose a different system
Finish saving any screen edit, then open the system dropdown.
Choose the applied system you want to use.
Review the before-and-after comparison and confirm Use system.
Inspect representative screens. Local overrides and hardcoded screen styles remain in place.
Drafts and missing references
An unapplied system is marked Draft. Selecting it offers Open draft so you can review and apply it first. Manage design systems opens the project library. No system is available when the design’s token references remain valid; resolve any missing-reference message before switching.
Edit a local exception
Use the Local overrides controls to add or edit a design-specific value. Inspector style changes can also create overrides. If a shared-system update seems to have no effect on an element, check for an override or hardcoded style.
When a change should apply to every design using a system, edit that system’s draft and use Review changes instead of repeating the same override in each design.
